MOVING CHILDREN AND FAMILIESMoving to a new state or a new community can be a very stressful experience for a family. However, it can also be a very exciting and wonderful time for all involved. Moving affords opportunities to discover a new neighborhood, forge new friendships, and become involved in a new way of life. Moving can also provide an opportunity for growth and development especially in the lives of the children in the family. To make the transition from one home to another parents are encouraged to take the following measures: 1. Explain clearly to the children why the move is necessary. 2. Familiarize the children as much as possible with the new area with maps, photographs, daily newspapers, and area activities. 3. Describe the advantages of the new community - such as local amusement parks, area lakes, mountains, wildlife, state parks, shopping malls, and other attractions. 4. After the move, get involved with the children in activities of the local church or synagogue, PTA, Scouts, YMCA, etc. 5. Encourage the children to become active in school activities - such as the school band, drama club, sports, SADD, etc.
Remember, the most important element in any family move is to maintain the sense of commitment and stability in the family - that the children know they are loved and their parents are actively working to meet their physical, emotional and social needs. The family move can be a very positive and growth oriented experience for all!
